Find a Mentor - Welcome.

The word "mentor" is definitely not a new one, it goes all the way back to Homer's "Odyssey." During the time the King of Ithaca went to go for the Trojan War, he left the kingdom to somebody named Mentor. This person was the teacher of Odysseuss' son.

What is a mentor?

In its simplest form, the word means trusted counsellor or a guide, but it could also be defined as a coach. More often than not, the mentor is somebody older, and definitely more experienced in the field concerned. A mentor comes in in so many kinds of spheres, it is very common in the business world, but we also see them in the medical field. A mentor is of course ever-present in the educational setting, particularly students who are "living dangerously", in terms of grades.

Tasks of a mentor

A mentor aids the student to review his or her weaknesses and strengths. A mentor helps the person enhance his skills and to have a far-term plan in terms of career -- if the setting is work-related. Being a "counsellor," a mentor is expected to help the student in times of crises, and this is emphatically true in work difficulties. The mentor could give a novel perspective to things, a way of looking at things that the newbie is still incapable of doing due to lack of experience. A very good mentor should be capable of brainstorming with his/her student, with both parties seriously considering the other's inputs. Still, if you are searching for a topnotch mentor, bear this in mind: the best mentor is one who suggests alternatives to things and issues, rather than ordering the student on what to accomplish. In its purest form, the mentor must be able to both inspire and motivate.
